TiVo Upgrades

TiVo Upgrades Technical Support

What's Here

The Assembled Board:

This is a picture of a fully assembled TiVoNET board.  It is ready to be plugged into the TiVo.  Note that a few components are missing.  These are not required with pre-programmed GALs and a normal ISA Legacy NE2000 compatible Ethernet board.  Also note that the IRQ is pre-set to IRQ5 with a trace on the board.

Power Connector:

A very important thing that needs to be done first, is to cut the yellow power wire going to the TiVoNET board.  The yellow wire carries 12 volts and can damage the TiVoNET board.  So, just take wire clippers and clip off the yellow wire from each end of the connector.  As noted in the picture below, the red wire in the power connector should be positioned to the bottom of the board, near the PCI connector.

This shows the power connector on the TiVoNET board.  Note that RED goes DOWN.

The Installation:

This shows the connector where the TiVoNET board will plug in.

Install the TiVoNET board on the connector on the TiVo motherboard.  Be very careful to not apply much force.  It should slide on pretty easily.

Here is a tip from Steven Finnegan for installing the TiVoNET when the connector doesn't seem to want to slip onto the motherboard connector:  There is a foot attached to the front left side of the chassis. It is attached by a plastic pin passing through the foot to expand the plastic and fasten the foot into place. Its the pin sticking up that prevents the connector from sliding on easily, and is much longer than it needs to be to perform its purpose.  From the bottom of the chassis, use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to pry the pin out of the center of the foot. Once out, the foot can be pulled out - though there is no reason to do so. Take a pair of wire cutters and cut about 1/8th inch off the pin, then reinsert it. The foot will still be retained, but the connector will slide on easily.

Attach the power cable to the TiVoNET board.  Make sure to clip the yellow wire off and put the red wire toward the bottom of the board.  The other end of the power cable should plug into the spare drive power connection or a "Y" adapter.

At this point you should power up your TiVo and test the TiVoNET board with the probe.o test.  See the TiVoNET Usage section for more info.

Once you are sure that the probe.o test is good, carefully install the Ethernet card in the ISA slot on the TiVoNET board.  Again, be very easy with it.  It should slide in without too much force.  Make sure to hold the TiVoNET board to keep it from sliding out of the TiVo connector.  Check the TiVoNET card and the Network Card to make sure that they are fully seated in the connector.

If you purchase or make a patch cable without boots, the RJ45 plug can be inserted in the square hole on the right side of the fan, into the TiVo unit.  If you have a patch cable with boots, cut the boot off of one end.  You will need to bend up the ear on the lid that covers the hole but this allows the lid to be closed during use.

This shows the patch cable routed thru the square hole in the back and plugged into the Ethernet Network Card.  Make sure and tie a loose knot in the patch cable at the square hole so the cable cannot be accidentally pulled out.

This shows the power cable plugged into an existing power connector in the TiVo.  If you have two drives, you will also need a "Y" adapter to split the power connection at the second drive.
